Introducing Alimentary: A Deliciously Versatile Font Family
As a designer, I’ve had my fair share of frustrating moments searching for the perfect font. I recall working on a project where I needed a font that was both retro and sophisticated, with a dash of whimsy. After scouring the internet, I finally stumbled upon a font that fit the bill, but I couldn’t help but think: what if I could create a font that combined my love of food, science, and typography? 🤔

And so, the Alimentary font family was born. The name “Alimentary” might seem unusual, but it’s actually an adjective that relates to nourishment or sustenance. As someone who’s passionate about food and typography, I knew I had to create a font that combined these two interests. The result is a family of four fonts – Alimentary Medium, Light, Heavy, and Outline – each with over 700 glyphs!
The Design Story Behind Alimentary
I started with Alimentary Medium, which was inspired by my shorter, wider font MacGuffin. I wanted to create something taller, narrower, and with a hip and retro feel. As I worked on the Medium weight, I felt like it needed a Light weight to provide more versatility. Then, a Heavy weight to add some drama. And finally, I thought, “what the heck,” and created an outline version of the Medium weight too! 🎉
Each member of the Alimentary family has a wide range of characters, including the basics (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and tons of punctuation), as well as 330 characters for European language support, and a limited selection of Greek, Coptic, and Cyrillic characters. Plus, you’ll find a double handful of alternates and ligatures to add a little variety to your designs!
