A Brief History of Charles Derriey
Charles Derriey, a typefounder, punchcutter, and printer from Paris, was the mastermind behind this typographic masterpiece. Born on August 17, 1808, in Moissey, Jura, France, Derriey began his journey in typography at a young age, learning the arts and crafts of printing in Besançon. In 1839, he opened his own print shop, equipped with a rotative printer and other state-of-the-art equipment. His work, showcased in the “Gravure et fonderie de C. Derriey : specimen-album” (Paris, 1862), is renowned for its exquisite ornaments and typographic excellence.
